Intuition in Leadership: Why the Best Leaders Trust It (and How You Can Cultivate It)

For decades, leadership advice focused heavily on analysis.

Data.
Metrics.
Rational decision-making.

And of course, these things matter.

But after working with thousands of leaders globally, I’ve observed something that distinguishes truly exceptional leaders:

They don’t rely on logic alone.

They also trust their intuition.

Interestingly, this isn’t just anecdotal.

Research from Harvard Business School shows that executives frequently combine analytical thinking with intuitive judgment when making complex decisions.

Similarly, a global CEO survey by PwC found that nearly 9 out of 10 executives rely on intuition when making critical decisions.

So why does intuition matter so much in leadership?

And how can busy leaders cultivate it more effectively?

Let’s explore.

What Intuition Really Is (and What It Isn’t)

Many people think intuition is mysterious or irrational.

In reality, intuition is simply fast pattern recognition.

Your brain constantly processes enormous amounts of information:

Past experiences
Emotional signals
Subtle environmental cues
Patterns you’ve seen before

Much of this processing happens below conscious awareness.

Intuition is the moment when this information surfaces as a “gut feeling.”

It is your mind saying:

“Something here matters.”

Often before your analytical mind can fully explain why.

In leadership, where decisions are frequently made under uncertainty, this ability becomes incredibly valuable.

Why Many Leaders Ignore Their Intuition

Despite its value, many leaders have learned to suppress intuition.

Why?

Because traditional corporate cultures often reward:

Certainty
Proof
Data-driven justification

Saying “I just have a feeling this is the right direction” rarely feels safe in a boardroom.

So leaders override their instincts.

Later, many of them tell me something interesting.

They say:

“I had a gut feeling… and I ignored it.”

Sometimes the decision worked out.

But often the intuition was pointing to something important.

A risk.
A misalignment.
Or an opportunity.

The Hidden Cost of Ignoring Your Inner Compass

When leaders disconnect from their intuition, something deeper often happens.

They begin to disconnect from themselves.

And this doesn’t just affect decisions at work.

It affects their entire life.

Many of the leaders I work with initially come to coaching because they want to:

Improve performance
Strengthen leadership skills
Navigate career transitions

But very quickly another topic emerges.

They want success without sacrificing their life.

They want:

More time with their loved ones.
More presence in their personal life.
More energy for things that truly matter.

And reconnecting with intuition often becomes a powerful part of that journey.

Because intuition helps leaders make choices that align with their values, not just external expectations.

How to Cultivate Intuition as a Leader

The good news is that intuition is not something you either have or don’t.

It’s a capacity you can strengthen.

Here are three powerful practices.

1. Create Space for Reflection

Insight rarely appears in constant busyness.

Yet many leaders operate in environments where their calendars are completely full.

Meeting after meeting.

Decision after decision.

But intuition requires space.

Many of the most effective leaders I coach deliberately schedule time for:

Thinking
Reflection
Strategic perspective

Sometimes their best ideas appear during a walk.

Or a quiet moment between commitments.

Clarity emerges when the mind has room to breathe.

2. Ask Yourself Better Questions

Before making an important decision, pause and ask:

What is my first instinct about this?

What feels aligned with my values?

If fear wasn’t involved, what would I choose?

These questions shift your attention inward.

They invite your intuition to speak.

And often, the answer becomes surprisingly clear.

3. Reconnect with What Truly Matters

Your intuition becomes much stronger when your values are clear.

When leaders are disconnected from their priorities, decisions become reactive.

But when they reconnect with what matters most, intuition becomes a powerful guide.

This is why leadership development is not just about strategy.

It’s also about self-awareness.

Because the more you understand yourself, the more clearly you can hear your inner compass.

A Powerful Mindset Shift for Leaders

Here is one shift I often invite leaders to consider:

Intuition is not the opposite of logic.

It is the partner of logic.

Logic helps you analyze.

Intuition helps you perceive.

Logic helps you evaluate risks.

Intuition helps you sense opportunities.

The most effective leaders don’t choose between the two.

They integrate both.

A Final Reflection

If you are a leader navigating complexity, uncertainty and constant demands, it may be worth asking yourself:

When was the last time I truly listened to my intuition?

Where might my inner voice already know the answer?

And perhaps the most powerful question of all:

What decision might be waiting for me if I trusted it more?

Because leadership is not just about achieving success.

It’s about building a life where success and meaning coexist.

And sometimes the quiet voice of intuition is the one pointing you in that direction.

“Your intuition is not guessing.
It is the quiet wisdom of experience speaking before logic catches up.”

To your success,

Isabel
