The Leadership Crisis Nobody Talks About: Spiritual Bankruptcy
Recently, a senior executive said something to me that stopped me in my tracks.
“I’ve achieved everything I set out to achieve. So why does it feel like something is missing?”
It’s a question I hear more often than you might imagine.
Not from struggling leaders.
From successful ones.
The ones who have built impressive careers, led large teams and achieved goals that many people aspire to.
Yet beneath the surface, something feels out of alignment.
Not because they are failing.
Because they have become disconnected.
This is what I call spiritual bankruptcy.
Before you misunderstand the term, let me explain.
I’m not talking about religion.
I’m talking about meaning.
Purpose.
Connection.
Presence.
The things that give life depth rather than simply activity.
How Spiritual Bankruptcy Shows Up
Most leaders don’t recognise it immediately.
Instead, it appears through subtle signs.
You become permanently busy but rarely fulfilled.
You achieve a goal but feel satisfaction for only a few moments before moving on to the next challenge.
You spend more time doing than reflecting.
You feel emotionally flat.
You stop noticing beauty, gratitude and simple joys.
Your identity becomes heavily attached to performance, achievement and productivity.
You lose connection with parts of yourself that once brought energy and meaning.
On the outside, everything may appear successful.
On the inside, something feels absent.
Why It Matters
Leadership is an energy transfer.
Whether leaders realise it or not, people feel their presence.
When leaders are connected, purposeful and grounded, they create trust, inspiration and stability.
When leaders become disconnected from themselves, the impact often spreads.
Teams may experience more pressure and less purpose.
More activity and less meaning.
More urgency and less humanity.
Eventually, organisations become efficient but uninspiring.
Productive but disconnected.
Successful but unfulfilled.
The Real Cost
The greatest cost isn’t burnout.
Although burnout often follows.
The greatest cost is spending years climbing a ladder only to discover it was leaning against the wrong wall.
I’ve worked with leaders who reached extraordinary levels of success before realising they had neglected relationships, wellbeing, personal growth, reflection or purpose along the way.
The good news is that awareness creates choice.
Returning to What Matters
Reconnection doesn’t require abandoning your career or moving to a remote mountain.
It begins with small acts of awareness.
Creating moments of stillness.
Making time for reflection.
Reconnecting with people you love.
Spending time in nature.
Practising gratitude.
Serving others.
Creating space to ask deeper questions.
Questions like:
Who am I becoming?
What matters most right now?
What gives me energy?
What drains it?
What kind of legacy do I want to leave?
Not just professionally.
Humanly.
A Different Definition of Success
Many leaders spend decades pursuing external success.
Perhaps the next chapter is about cultivating internal success too.
Success measured not only by achievements.
But by peace.
Presence.
Purpose.
Connection.
And contribution.
Because at the end of our lives, people will not remember the number of meetings we attended, emails we answered or targets we achieved.
They will remember how we made them feel.
How we showed up.
How we lived.
And perhaps the greatest leadership challenge of all is this:
To build a successful career without losing ourselves in the process.
If this resonates with you, perhaps the question isn’t how to become a better leader.
Perhaps the question is:
How can you become more fully yourself again?
That’s where meaningful leadership begins.
If you’re ready to create a culture where high performance and wellbeing reinforce each other rather than compete, I’d love to help. Together, we can build the leadership habits, team dynamics and organisational culture that unlock sustainable performance—without sacrificing your people along the way.
To your success,
Isabel
