They follow trust.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"720\" data-end=\"902\">This has been true in every team I\u2019ve coached, every executive I\u2019ve worked with, and every leadership journey I\u2019ve observed\u2014regardless of industry, culture, or level of experience.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"1193\">In fact, when I think about the most inspiring leaders I\u2019ve met, what made them exceptional wasn\u2019t their title or authority. It was how they made people feel in their presence. They listened deeply. They owned their mistakes. They showed up with integrity, even when no one was watching.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1247\">They didn\u2019t lead from above. They led from within.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Myth of the Title<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1422\">We place so much emphasis on climbing the ladder that we sometimes forget to ask:\u00a0<em data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1422\">what kind of leader do I want to be once I get there?<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1656\">It\u2019s easy to fall into the trap of believing that leadership is about having the answers, the influence, the control. But over and over again, studies show that\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1655\">trust\u2014not authority\u2014is the real foundation of effective leadership<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"1658\" data-end=\"1733\">Harvard Business Review reports that employees who trust their leaders are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1757\">\n<h3><strong data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1757\">76% more engaged<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1760\" data-end=\"1783\">\n<h3><strong data-start=\"1760\" data-end=\"1783\">50% more productive<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1851\">\n<h3>And <strong data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1827\">more than twice as likely to stay<\/strong>\u00a0with their organization<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1903\">That\u2019s not just theory. That\u2019s bottom-line impact.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"1989\">But here\u2019s the nuance:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1989\">trust isn\u2019t granted by position. It\u2019s earned by presence.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"1991\" data-end=\"2057\">It\u2019s not just\u00a0<em data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2011\">what<\/em>\u00a0you do\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0<em data-start=\"2024\" data-end=\"2029\">how<\/em>\u00a0you show up while doing it.<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h2><strong>So\u2026 What Does Trust Look Like in Practice?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2116\" data-end=\"2317\">Trust is a word we use often in leadership conversations, but it\u2019s also one we rarely pause to define. It\u2019s not just about keeping confidential information or being reliable\u2014though those things matter.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2443\"><em><strong data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2443\">Trust is about emotional safety. It\u2019s about congruence. It\u2019s about making people feel seen, heard, and safe to be human.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2445\" data-end=\"2648\">It\u2019s in the way you listen when someone disagrees with you.<br data-start=\"2504\" data-end=\"2507\" \/>It\u2019s how you handle feedback, especially when it\u2019s uncomfortable.<br data-start=\"2572\" data-end=\"2575\" \/>It\u2019s what you do when you\u2019ve made a mistake and no one else would know.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2793\">Trust is in the small, consistent moments\u2014not the grand speeches. It\u2019s in your follow-through, your tone, your timing, and your transparency.<\/h3>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Leadership Without Trust is Just Management<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2853\" data-end=\"2874\">Let me share a story.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"3057\">Not long ago, I worked with a senior executive in a fast-scaling global business. On paper, her resume was flawless. Top schools. Top companies. The right titles at the right times.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3059\" data-end=\"3171\">But her team was disengaged. High turnover. Low morale. People avoided speaking up, especially in her presence.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3173\" data-end=\"3377\">When we explored why, it became clear: she was leading\u00a0<em data-start=\"3228\" data-end=\"3243\">from position<\/em>, not from\u00a0<em data-start=\"3254\" data-end=\"3266\">connection<\/em>. She made decisions in isolation. Rarely admitted mistakes. Praised in public, but didn\u2019t listen in private.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3379\" data-end=\"3517\">She thought trust came automatically with her title. But in reality, trust had to be rebuilt\u2014<em data-start=\"3472\" data-end=\"3517\">deliberately, vulnerably, and consistently.<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3519\" data-end=\"3800\">Over time, as she leaned into more honest conversations, started asking for feedback, and gave credit more generously, things changed. The shift didn\u2019t happen overnight, but it happened. People leaned in again. They trusted her not because of her role, but because of her humanity.<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h2><strong>Building Trust: It\u2019s Not Complicated, But It Is Intentional<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3876\" data-end=\"3913\">So, how do we build trust as leaders?<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"3915\" data-end=\"4026\">There\u2019s no magic formula, but there are foundational behaviors that make a profound difference. Here are a few:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"4030\" data-end=\"4130\">\n<h3><strong data-start=\"4030\" data-end=\"4048\">Be consistent.<\/strong>Trust doesn\u2019t come from occasional brilliance\u2014it comes from everyday reliability.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4133\" data-end=\"4221\">\n<h3><strong data-start=\"4133\" data-end=\"4165\">Listen without interrupting.<\/strong>It\u2019s harder than it sounds, but silence speaks volumes.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4224\" data-end=\"4294\">\n<h3><strong data-start=\"4224\" data-end=\"4243\">Follow through.<\/strong>If you say you\u2019ll do something, do it. Every time.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4297\" data-end=\"4386\">\n<h3><strong data-start=\"4297\" data-end=\"4325\">Admit when you\u2019re wrong.<\/strong>Perfection isn\u2019t relatable. Vulnerability builds connection.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4389\" data-end=\"4488\">\n<h3><strong data-start=\"4389\" data-end=\"4408\">Be transparent.<\/strong>People can handle tough news. What they can\u2019t handle is being left in the dark.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"4490\" data-end=\"4646\">And perhaps most importantly\u2014<strong data-start=\"4519\" data-end=\"4532\">be human.<\/strong>\u00a0Your team doesn\u2019t need a superhero. They need a leader they can believe in, one who shows up as their whole self.<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h2><strong>The Trust Legacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-start=\"4699\" data-end=\"4901\">At the end of your leadership journey, people may not remember the targets you hit or the projects you led. But they will remember how you made them feel. Whether they felt respected. Empowered.
