Allow me to leave you with this thought at the end of yet another week amid one of the craziest times in history:
Today, the struggles leaders face are both real and widespread. I watch in disbelief how some leaders are thrown into the deep end to sink or swim. They either figure out how to become a successful leader or fail and retreat disillusioned back as individual contributors, unlikely to step up into a leadership role again.
I feel frustration by the unbelievable potential that lies within many of us, never to be realised, because of past failed attempts at leading.
How often do you see high-performing individuals promoted into leadership roles? Yet the skills that enabled an individual to perform at a high level are rarely the same ones that will support them as an influential leader. That capacity will come with practice, education, mentoring and plenty of mistakes and failures along the way.
Stepping into a leadership role is one of the most courageous decisions in one’s career. In today’s world, a new kind of leader is required. A leader that consistently leads others by supporting people and the organization to grow intentionally through pursuing goals that stretch their skills, collaborating and fostering interdependence, opening doors of opportunity for others, and a commitment and passion for becoming better leaders.
No one is immune to facing new challenges. Leaders must understand the problems, identify what needs to be done now, and how they can impact the organization.
What’s happening in leadership today is going to end up costing all of us in the years to come. But when so many examples of current leadership are tied up with ego and distrust, you have to wonder where we’re heading.
The only way to avoid what’s coming is to find the people who are courageous enough to lead us in the right direction.
Strong leadership is now more important than ever. We need you. Most of us are not born leaders. Most leaders are made. And you can too. Choose to lead and help us make this world a better place.
