What I Wish I Knew If I Were Promoted to a Leadership Role Today

Stepping into a leadership role — whether for the first time or the tenth — is one of the most profound transitions a professional can experience.

It’s exciting.
It’s energising.
And if we’re honest… it’s also overwhelming.

Many leaders tell me, “I thought I was ready — and then I realised how much I didn’t know.”

If I were promoted to a leadership role today, knowing everything I’ve learned from coaching leaders across the world, here’s exactly what I wish someone had whispered in my ear on day one.

1. You Don’t Need All the Answers — Just the Right Questions

When I started leading teams years ago, I believed that leaders needed to know.
Know the strategy.
Know the direction.
Know the solution.

But here’s the truth I wish I’d learned earlier:

Leadership is not an answer-giving profession — it’s a question-asking one.

The best leaders aren’t the ones who speak first. They’re the ones who create space, ask meaningful questions, and help others think better.

If I were starting today, I’d remind myself:
“What do you think?” is a far more powerful leadership tool than “Here’s what we’re going to do.”

2. Leadership Is Not About Control — It’s About Clarity & Connection

Many new leaders assume their job is to take charge, make decisions quickly, and keep everything under control.

But controlling everything limits people, creativity, and trust.
Clarity, on the other hand, liberates.

Teams don’t need a boss who micromanages the ‘how’.
They need a leader who:

  • Brings clarity to the why

  • Connects meaning to the what

  • Empowers ownership of the how

Modern leadership is about influence, not authority.
Direction, not domination.
Connection, not control.

3. People Don’t Follow Titles — They Follow Trust

If I could go back, I would tell my younger self:
Your title will open the door, but trust is what keeps people walking through it.

Trust is built through:

  • Consistency

  • Integrity

  • Listening

  • Vulnerability

  • Follow-through

Your team doesn’t want you to be perfect.
They want you to be human, honest, and available.

A leader who earns trust becomes unstoppable — because their team believes with them, not just in them.

4. Emotional Intelligence Will Matter More Than Intelligence Itself

Today’s world moves too fast for leaders who rely solely on logic or expertise.
What people long for is a leader who can read the room, sense tension, centre themselves under pressure, and respond with calm wisdom.

If someone asked me the most important leadership skill of the future, my answer is simple:
Emotional intelligence — without question.

It’s not soft.
It’s not optional.
It’s the core of high-performing leadership.

5. You Don’t Have to Do Leadership Alone

This may be the lesson I would repeat to myself the most.
New leaders often feel they must prove themselves.
They carry their struggles silently.
They try to figure everything out without support.

But the leaders who grow the fastest are the ones who seek perspective, coaching, and guidance early.
Leadership is not a solo sport — and it was never meant to be.

Over to you now: If you started your leadership journey today — what would you do differently?

Leadership is not a promotion.
It’s not a title.
It’s not a badge of honour.

Leadership is a transformation — of how you think, how you show up, and how you elevate others.
