COULD THIS BE THE FUTURE OF THE WORKFORCE

COULD THIS BE THE FUTURE OF WORK?

The COVID-19 crisis has dramatically impacted the way that we perform our jobs. With stay home orders and social distancing guidelines in effect, many of us who have the option to work from home are doing so.

While some companies have previously offered work-from-home opportunities to their employees, the pandemic has dramatically increased the numbers of remote workers.

Over the last few weeks, I have often been asked whether our new ways of working during COVID-19 could present new ways for our workplaces to change going forward.

Could this be the future of work? In researching about the topic, I came across an interesting TED Talk by Matt Mullenweg, CEO of WordPress.com, jetpack and WooCommerce, where he discusses how to create an equal playing field at work where location is not necessarily important.

In his talk, Matt Mullenweg discusses how a distributed workforce is the most effective way to build a company based on the premise that talent and intelligence are equally distributed throughout the world, where opportunity is not.

Could this become a new way to consciously tap into the world’s best talent?

One thing is certain – for companies to not only survive, but thrive in the world we live in, we need to stop micromanaging and start giving people autonomy over how they do their work.

Over the last few weeks, employees have had to adapt to new working conditions, in many cases having to work from home, whilst also caring for children, family, pets and home chores. What’s really astonishing is how many have managed to accommodate the new changes and still remain productive despite having less active working hours to do it all. When faced with adversity, our minds will look for ways to come up with smarter ways to work. This could potentially offer new opportunities to work smarter, not harder, and still manage to achieve better results faster, whilst also enjoying better work life integration. COVID-19 is offering great learning opportunities for us to learn about, and we must do our best to draw those lessons out.

Will employees be able to remain focused, motivated and productive if allowed to create their own working environments? Could this be the future of work?

Find out how Matt Mullenweg explains if this could be relevant to you by watching this short – but impactful – 4 minute TED Talk.

Let’s not waste this once in a lifetime opportunity to redefine the way thrive both personally and professionally. Since changing careers to become a business owner years ago, my slogan has always been to always seek to achieve personal fulfillment and professional excellence. Can we have them both? We can, and this is the perfect opportunity to help us get out of outdates ways of working and coming up with better ways to create a productive, engaged and high-performing workforce.

¡Por tu éxito!
