Have you ever wondered why you think or communicate the way you do?

“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.” Lao Tzu

If you are looking for a quick tool to help you better understand yourself – and others – immediately, then take a DISC profile test. In no more than 20 minutes, you’ll have a better understanding of yourself and the way you operate, and insights into how you can communicate with others more effectively.

WHAT IS DISC?

DISC is a profiling assessment tool used as a method for understanding behavior, temperament, and personality. A DISC Profile provides a comprehensive overview of the way that people think, act, and interact. It is the most widely used profiling tool of its kind, and is supported by decades of validation and reliability studies.

The DISC Personality Profile is based on the work of renowned psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston. He developed the DISC Personality Profile after studying the personality traits, behavioral patterns, and instinctual reactions of thousands of individuals. As a result of his work, Marston developed the DISC assessment as a tool to measure four primary behavioral traits:

The DISC Personality Profile identifies patterns of behavior, and can be used to implement solutions for maximizing an individual’s strengths and minimizing weaknesses. The DISC Personality Profile is used in a wide variety of settings, including business, education, sales, coaching, and counselling. Primary applications of the DISC Personality Profile include:

  • Strengthening communication skills
  • Building leadership abilities
  • Diffusing interpersonal conflict
  • Choosing attainable goals
  • Boosting performance and productivity
  • Increasing motivation
  • Strengthening workplace skills
  • Constructing strong teams
  • Making smart hiring decisions

The DISC Profile (or DISC Assessment) is one of the most well known and accepted assessment tools to ever be developed.

DISC is a user-friendly, fun and very applicable common language which, once properly understood between two people, will lead to improved communication, less conflict and deeper levels of mutual trust. DISC is a simple but powerful tool to use in developing teams, communication programs, conflict resolution, sales effectiveness, and any other training associated with creating more effective relationships. The DISC profile provides a foundation for people to first understand themselves, second understand others and third adapt their communication style to increase communication effectiveness. The ultimate purpose of DISC is to help people improve their Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

According to Mark H McCormack, author of “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School ”, “the key to success is reading people”. What this simply means, is that the foundation of personal and professional success is to know yourself, know others and adapting oneself to the behavioural characteristics of others.

I am DISC Certified and able to use DiscAsia Plus, which offers an Asian version test of the DISC profiling system. As more and more people in Asia are using the DISC instrument,  this tool has been contextualized with the Asian culture in mind. The test can also be performed in the following 8 languagages:

1.English
2. Simplified Chinese
3. Traditional Chinese
4. Bahasa Malaysia
5. Bahasa Indonesia
6. Japanese
7. Thai
8. Vietnamese

The key to using DISC personality testing effectively is to understand that whatever your DISC personal profile is, it is just perfect for you. There are no good or bad profiles.

No matter what your profile is, there will be times when being yourself will work just fine for you, and there will be times when it doesn’t work. At times like this, when being yourself does not produce positive results for you, you need to be able to adapt your thinking and behaviour to be more effective:

Adaptable Behaviour

Knowing your own DISC style is helpful in understanding your own natural behavioural tendencies and how to meet your individual needs. But when building relationships with others – something we all have to do – knowing how to adapt your behaviour to improve relationships with other people improves communication and creates win/win solutions.

If you want your co-workers to work well with you and give their best, then you need to be aware of your behaviour and the impact you have on your work relationships. DISC assessments make this easy.

The DISC model also describes behaviours that are also easily recognisable in other people. Not only can you develop a better understanding of your own needs and behaviour, you can also build a deep understanding of the people around you, their unique needs and why they behave the way they do.

Thousands of organisations – large and small – have transformed their workplace environment through DISC assessments.
