In the Age of AI, We Don’t Need More Managers. We Need Leaders Who Make More Possible.

There is a provocative idea circulating in leadership thinking at the moment: in the age of AI, we need magicians, not managers.

I recently came across this idea in an article from IMD, and it stayed with me. The argument is that as AI makes knowledge increasingly accessible and rapidly outdated, leadership can no longer be primarily about knowing more, controlling processes or having the right answers. It has to become about enabling people and creating the conditions for new ideas to emerge.

After more than two decades working with leaders and teams across different countries, cultures and industries, I believe this is an important shift.

Because I’ve noticed something.

Many talented leaders are still trying to prove their value by being the person with the answer.

And I understand why.

For much of their careers, expertise has been their currency. They became successful because they knew their business, solved problems quickly and could be relied upon when things became difficult.

But AI is changing the game.

If a machine can analyse information in seconds, generate a strategy in minutes and give you ten possible solutions before you’ve finished your coffee, your value as a leader cannot simply be knowing more.

It has to be what you do with that knowledge.

And, more importantly, what you enable other people to do.

From Answer-Giver to Possibility-Creator

This is where I see a profound opportunity for leadership.

The strongest leaders I work with are not necessarily the ones who speak the most or have the quickest answer.

They are the ones who create the environment in which other people think better.

They ask:

What are we missing?

What else could be possible?

Who has a perspective we haven’t heard yet?

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Those questions can unlock something that instruction rarely does:

ownership.

And ownership is one of the foundations of sustainable high performance.

The Human Advantage

The irony is that the more powerful AI becomes, the more important our humanity becomes.

Technology can provide information.

But people need meaning.

Technology can generate options.

But leaders need judgement.

Technology can automate tasks.

But trust still has to be built between human beings.

This is why I believe the future of leadership is not less human.

It has to become more human.

Curiosity. Courage. Empathy. Connection. Perspective. Values. The ability to read a room. The willingness to have the difficult conversation. The wisdom to know when not to act.

These are not outdated leadership skills.

They are becoming more valuable.

A Different Question for Leaders

So perhaps the question isn’t:

“How do I keep up with AI?”

Of course, leaders need to understand and use the technology.

But I would add another question:

“What kind of human leadership becomes possible because AI can do more?”

Imagine spending less time chasing information and more time developing people.

Less time solving every operational problem and more time creating strategic thinking.

Less time controlling and more time enabling.

Less time proving your value and more time multiplying the value of others.

That is the shift.

And it connects deeply with what I believe about radically human leadership.

Your job isn’t to be the smartest person in the room.

Your job is to create a room where extraordinary thinking can happen.

That is what I mean by making more possible.

And perhaps, in the age of AI, that’s the real magic.

The leaders who thrive won’t necessarily be the ones who know the most.

They’ll be the ones who can help people see, think and create what nobody could see before.

So here’s my question for you:

Are you managing what already exists—or creating the conditions for what could exist?

The future of leadership may depend on your answer.

To your success,
Isabel
